The Trashmanian Devil loves the holidays, but doesn’t love the waste and the trash and all that wrapping paper that ends up as litter on his street. That’s why he’s a fan of Lisa Inglesias of Las Hermanas Iglesias, a quirky sister team that experiments with everything from performance art to photography. Recently they have been making pinatas–with a contemporary twist, the kind that cheerfully incorporate the Dark Side. Trashman had a chance to talk to Lisa when she installed her pinata grenade at the Carriage House Workspace last week. He was impressed with the care she took to use materials that can be recycled–in this case, cardboard. Her commitment to reducing her carbon footprint even extends to her choice of a French press coffee machine: no paper filters, no plastic, great coffee. Her “grenade” went off at an opening reception December 4, and a lot of happy children scrambled for the candy inside. And yes, the idea is that the innocence and enthusiasm of our next generation can destroy–and should– our military ordnance. A nice message for the season.
